Tidal Rush

Tidal Rush

I have long wanted to venture out to this remote little sea stack. However, time always seemed in short supply and it was well off the beaten path. After some serious thought as to where I wanted to focus my efforts on a recent trip up to the Pacific Northwest, I remained resolute in my desire to stand before this coastal gem! After planning in advance to ensure we had a low tide to make this possible and starting our hike well before sunset, we were off! The conditions were beautiful but there was little hope of any color in the sky, as it was overcast and stormy. At the very least, I was hoping for a moody shot here. After hiking just short of seven miles, we finally arrived. Boulder hopping and wet to the waist, I began picking apart the scene for the best possible composition. With light fading quickly, this starfish caught my eye, clinging to the rocky tidal zone with waves rushing over it! After framing up for the shot, I captured water movement over the starfish as the sky just opened up with a crescendo of color for all but a minute at best before it was gone! I couldn’t believe my fortune as I thought we were not going to have a brilliant sky that night. What an exceptional surprise that had me smiling all the way back just before 1 AM, cold and soaked!
