As the desert begins to transform from spring greens, the brittlebrush, lupine and owl’s clover begin to fade away, there is this delicate and hearty little desert survivor. Engelmann’s Hedgehog cactus, short, squat and very, very prickly and given just the right conditions, it too blooms with its almost unbelievable magenta flowers! Upon first glance of these before your very eyes you would think that they are fake as they are so brilliant and colorful, yet they are one of the most remarkable of desert crown jewels I have ever seen! When I came upon this composition, perfectly lined up with these desert pinnacles, I knew that this is where I was going to sit tight for the evening and as you can tell, the sunset did not disappoint!
